How to Prepare your Hair for Dying

Depending on the type of hair you have, you may need to prepare it before dying with semi permanent hair colour.

Patch Test

Mom always says 'better safe than sorry' and in this case, she's totally right! we know... 'you don't have any allergies' or 'you'll be fine'... in most cases you will be, but it's important that you do a patch test just to make sure.

Do this by picking a place discreet that you will be able to apply a small amount of dye so you don't look like a weirdo walking around with a dot on you.

  1. Wash and dry the skin in that area (maybe behind the ear or inner fold of the elbow).
  2. Put a bit of dye on the area- roughly 2cm or so)
  3. Let it dry and do not disturb for 24 hours
  4. Check it out- if there's no redness, itchies, bumps or pain then you're good to go. If you experience any of those symptoms, wash off immediately.

If you experience a severe allergic reaction, seek medical attention immediately. If you have a known allergy to anything, ensure you have checked the ingredient list before trying out the hair dye.

Strand Test

If you haven't used a particular colour before and you want to try it out before taking the plunge, try a strand test first. To do this, apply a small amount of colour to a discreet section of hair before attempting a larger amount. You could try the hair tip of a hair section or a hidden section closer to the scalp.

The result of the strand test may be affected by the lightness of hair and if you have already bleached or pre-lightened it. Make sure to consider this when you colour!

Lightening or Bleaching Hair

If you want a vibrant colour, then bleaching/ lightening your hair is necessary. This is especially true for darker hair colours. On dark hair, if you don't bleach it first, the colour will only show up as a subtle tint.

There are many different brands available to bleach hair. Whichever one you go for, make sure to read the instructions and do your homework because it can damage your hair.

Wash your Hair

Washing your hair before with a deep cleansing shampoo will ensure that your hair is ready to be coloured. It's best to use a ph neutral shampoo and DO NOT CONDITION it!
